There is a concept that is very confusing…Dr. Yang said in this video (lesson 2) that the «Yi» mind is horse mind/wisdom/logic and located in the front part of the brain/cortex, and the «Xin» mind, monkey mind/emotional mind/memory is the limbic system. However, he also said that the subconscious mind (referring to the limbic system) is the truth/true feeling, but the conscious mind (referring to the cortex) is lying/manipulating and should be kind of controlled…how can the «Xin» mind be at the same time a «monkey mind» and the «truth»…and the «Yi» mind wisdom and lying…I don’t understand the difference between Yi/Xin & conscious (logic)/subconscious (emotional/limbic) mind…thanks 😊
I asked Dr. Yang for clarification and he said: The conscious mind has brain cells (involves thinking, focus, and manipulation) and includes the Yi (wisdom mind) & Xin (emotional mind). The Yi is located near the front of the brain while the Xin is on the rear side.
The subconscious mind refers to your gut feeling and this is in the limbic system.
My 2 cents – For example, when we meditate we’re often distracted by thoughts and emotions and it’s up to the Yi to regulate the Xin to focus on our meditation practice. This is a conscious effort. If we get to the stage Dr. Yang describes as “regulating without regulating,” we’re doing it subconsciously. This can apply to other efforts/practices as well.
Another example: The lying/manipulation he describes is often referring to the “masks” we create to function while in society. We present a certain image of ourselves which can be different from our true selves. This is done with our conscious mind.
I hope this offers some insight. Thanks for watching the webinar and please let us know if you have more questions. Thanks!
