How many times can you open and close your hand within 30 seconds?
Slow-twitch fibers and fast-twitch fibers are two types of muscle fibers found in our skeletal muscles. Slow-twitch fibers contract more slowly but can sustain contractions for longer periods of time. These fibers are well-suited for endurance activities such as long-distance running. Fast-twitch fibers contract rapidly but fatigue relatively quickly compared to slow-twitch fibers. These fibers are involved in generating quick, powerful movements and utilized for activities such as sprinting or weightlifting.
Finger speed training conditions the fast-twitch muscles in our hands for faster grabbing speed. Martial artists will engage in other speed conditioning exercises for faster striking, kicking, footwork, and more.
Finger speed training is important not only for martial arts conditioning but also for overall health. This quick and easy practice stimulates the meridians (qi channels) and may help delay or prevent the onset of arthritis in the wrists and fingers.
Finger Speed is the last segment of Dr. Yang’s daily routine. The YMAA Retreat Center students and guests followed this same routine during the training programs.
